The responsibilities of the groomsmen

A groomsman is someone who is important to the groom. He could be a close friend, brother, cousin or even the father.

He serves as an advisor to the groom (so choose carefully). He helps the groom get organized and can even help with wedding planning details. At the wedding he also can help seat guests at the wedding.

While the groom will want his best friends, be sure to choose friends who are responsible enough to handle the responsibilities outlined below.

Groomsmen duties and responsibilities:

  • Help best man with bachelor party.
  • Arrive dressed at ceremony site at least 1 hour before the ceremony.
  • Seat guests as they arrive (ushers)
  • Pass out programs and directions to the reception as guests arrive.
  • Roll aisle runner down the aisle after mothers are seated.
  • Stand to the left of best man according to height (tallest to shortest) facing the guests during the processional.
  • Direct guests to the reception site (ushers)
  • Sit at head table next to bridesmaids
  • Dance with bridesmaids and other important guests.

The expenses of being a groomsmen:

  • Pay for your own suit except for boutonniere
  • Pay for your own hotel accommodations and travel arrangements.
  • A good groomsmen contributes money for the bachelor party, and sees to it the party is a success.
